# The code is printed. Where it goes is still yours to change.

A dynamic QR code points at a destination you control, so it can be edited and measured after it is printed. A static one cannot. **That is the whole difference.**

Where should your QR code point today?

You can change this later without reprinting.

### Static: baked in

The destination is encoded in the image itself. It works forever, costs nothing, and cannot be changed or measured. A typo means a reprint.

### Dynamic: redirected

The image encodes a short link you own. Change where it goes, as often as you like, and every printed copy follows instantly.

### Only one can be measured

A static code never touches a server you control, so there is nothing to count. Analytics require a dynamic code.

After the print run

## The campaign ended. The jars are still on the shelf.

Point the code at the promotion while it runs, then at the product page, then at your Instagram when you want followers instead. Nothing on the packaging changes.

* Change the destination any time
* Every printed copy follows at once
* Schedule a change for a date

Measurement

## A static code tells you nothing. Not even how many.

Because the scan goes straight from the phone to the destination, there is no step in between to record it. A dynamic code passes through a link you own, which is what makes every scan countable.

* Scans by place, device and time
* Unique versus returning visitors
* A separate code per placement

More than a redirect

## Once the scan passes through you, it can do more than redirect.

Route by country, ask a question, show a contact card, collect an email, or send someone different somewhere different. All of it sits on the dynamic side of the line.

* Different destination by country or device
* Forms, choices and contact cards
* Straight into your CRM

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

Everything about the difference.

What is the difference between a dynamic and a static QR code?

A static code encodes the destination in the image itself, so it can never be changed or measured. A dynamic code encodes a short link you control, so the destination can be edited after printing and every scan is counted.

Can I convert a static QR code into a dynamic one?

No. The destination is part of the printed image, so changing it means a new code and a reprint. It is the main reason to start dynamic even when you do not yet need to change anything.

Does a dynamic QR code expire?

Not on Linkbreakers. The code keeps working as long as the link exists, and you can set an expiry deliberately if you want one.

Is a dynamic QR code slower to open?

Not noticeably. The redirect adds a few milliseconds and the destination loads as it normally would.

Can I track a dynamic QR code?

Yes, and it is the only kind you can. Location, device, time, source and returning visitors on every scan. See [QR code analytics](https://linkbreakers.com/features/qr-code-analytics).

Are dynamic QR codes free?

On the free plan, yes, including editing the destination and tracking scans. Paid plans add custom domains, bulk creation and higher limits.

When is a static code the right choice?

When the destination genuinely cannot change and you do not care how often it is scanned. A wifi password on a wall, or a vCard you are happy to reprint.
