# How to add an AI chat bot to a QR code or link

> Add a Chat bot step to a QR code or link: one of your agents chats with visitors in your page theme, answers their questions from what you taught it, and saves the details you asked for on their visitor profile. The workflow goes on along a Completed or a Not completed branch.

## Short answer

To chat with visitors after they scan a QR code or open a link, add a **Chat bot** step to the link's workflow and pick one of your [agents](https://linkbreakers.com/help/article/how-to-create-an-agent). You list what the agent should learn, for example an email, a company or a budget, with a short explanation for each. The visitor sees a chat in your page theme. The agent answers their questions from its knowledge, asks for what you need one thing at a time, and saves each answer on the visitor's profile like a form would. When every required answer is known the workflow goes on along **Completed**, otherwise along **Not completed**.

Each message the agent answers costs platform credits. When the workspace is out of credits, visitors skip the chat and go straight on along **Not completed**. The step is available on every plan.

## Quick summary

- A page step in the workflow editor's interaction steps, styled by your [page theme](https://linkbreakers.com/help/article/whats-a-page-theme).
- The conversation is run by one of your agents. You can pick an existing agent or create one from the step, without leaving the workflow.
- You decide what the agent should learn: a label, the key it is saved under, a type (text, email, phone, number, date or a few choices), an explanation, and whether it is required.
- Answers are checked like form fields and saved on the visitor's profile. Email, first name, last name and phone fill the visitor's identity.
- Two branches: **Completed** and **Not completed**. When **Not completed** is not connected, it follows **Completed**.
- **Skip when already known** passes over the chat for visitors whose required answers are already on their profile.
- Each chat shows in the visit's activity timeline, with the answers and the full conversation, and in Slack notifications and webhooks.
- Also available through the API, the MCP server and the Assistant.

## Step-by-step

1. Go to [Links](https://app.linkbreakers.com/workspace/dashboard/links) and open the QR code or link. Its workflow opens.
2. Click the **+** button on the connector where the chat should happen, for example between the scan and the destination.
3. In the interaction steps, choose **Chat Bot**.
4. Pick the **Agent**. If the workspace has no agent yet, the step lets you create one right there: a name, a role, a tone and, optionally, what it should know. To fine-tune an existing agent, click **Edit agent**: its settings open in a panel over the workflow.
5. Under **What the agent should learn**, keep or remove the suggested **Email** and add what you need. The buttons add common items in one click (first name, last name, phone, company, job title), and **Something else** adds your own. For each item:
   - **Label**: what you are asking for, for example "Company size".
   - **Saved as**: the key of the visitor attribute, filled from the label.
   - **Type**: text, email, phone, number, date, or **One of a few choices** with one choice per line.
   - **Explanation**: what it means and what a good answer looks like, written as you would brief a colleague. The agent reads it.
   - **Required**: the chat is completed only when every required item is known.
6. Optionally set an **Opening message**. Left empty, the agent greets visitors in its own words.
7. Set **Messages a visitor can send** (15 by default). Past this limit the chat ends and the visitor moves on.
8. Choose whether to **Skip when already known** and whether to **Show a skip button**.
9. Click **Create Chat Bot**. When you insert it on an existing connector, the **Completed** branch leads to the step that came next, and **Not completed** follows it until you connect it elsewhere.
10. Scan the code with your phone and chat with your agent to check both paths.

## What the visitor sees

- A page in your page theme with the agent's name, its messages, and a box to write their own. Messages are limited to 500 characters.
- A typing indicator while the agent answers, and a warning when only a few messages are left.
- The skip button, when turned on.
- When the chat is over, the agent's last message stays on screen for a moment, then the visitor moves on.

## How each branch behaves

### Completed

Every required item is known: the visitor gave it in the chat, or it was already on their profile. The workflow continues on the **Completed** branch.

### Not completed

The workflow continues on this branch when:

- the visitor pressed the skip button or asked the agent to stop before giving every required answer,
- the visitor sent as many messages as the step allows,
- the workspace ran out of platform credits, or the agent could not answer.

When **Not completed** is not connected, it follows **Completed**, so a single connection is enough for simple flows. When neither is connected, visitors go to the link's [fallback destination](https://linkbreakers.com/help/article/what-is-a-fallback-destination-in-linkbreakers).

## What it costs

Each message the agent answers costs platform credits, based on what the AI model used for it. A typical message costs about 15 credits, and one message never costs more than 100. The opening message costs nothing when you write it yourself. Messages are charged to the workspace that owns the link, never to the visitor.

When the workspace does not have enough credits left, the chat does not start and visitors go on along **Not completed**, so your QR code keeps working.

## Where the answers go

- Each answer is saved on the visitor's profile under its key, exactly like a form field. Email, first name, last name and phone fill the visitor's identity.
- The visit's activity timeline shows how the chat ended, the agent, every answer, and the full conversation.
- Slack notifications and webhooks include the chat's outcome and answers.
- [Visitor data conditions](https://linkbreakers.com/help/article/how-to-use-visitor-data-conditions) placed after the chat can route on the answers right away.

## Limits and caveats

- An agent only knows what you tell it in its instructions and knowledge. With the **Only answer from knowledge** guardrail, it says it does not know rather than guessing.
- A step can have up to 10 items to learn, and allows between 3 and 30 visitor messages.
- An agent used by a Chat bot step cannot be deleted. Give the step another agent or delete the step first.
- The chat is recorded once per visit: reloading the page shows the same conversation.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can the agent answer questions about my business?

Yes. Write what it should know in its knowledge, as Markdown documents: opening hours, prices, an FAQ, a product sheet. What it does with questions depends on its **Visitor questions** setting: answer and steer back to the goal, answer briefly, only collect, or chat freely.

### What happens when a visitor already gave their email?

With **Skip when already known** turned on, a visitor whose required answers are already on their profile skips the chat and goes on along **Completed**. Without it, the agent never asks for something it already knows, and only asks for what is missing.

### Which language does the agent speak?

By default, the visitor's language: the language of their browser before they write, then the language of their messages. You can set a fixed language in the agent's settings.

### Do I need a paid plan?

No. The Chat bot step is available on every plan. Its messages use platform credits, which every plan includes.

### Can I use the same agent on several links?

Yes. Agents belong to the workspace, and the same agent can run the chat on as many links as you like, each with its own list of things to learn. The agent's page shows every link that uses it.
