# How to create an agent

> Agents are the chat personas your workspace builds for its visitors: a role, a tone, rules and the knowledge they answer from. Create one in the Agents section or straight from a Chat bot step, then reuse it on as many links as you like.

## Short answer

An agent is a chat persona your workspace builds to talk with your visitors. You give it a name, a role (for example lead qualifier or event concierge), a tone, rules it never breaks, and knowledge written in Markdown. You then plug it into workflow steps that need one, starting with the [Chat bot step](https://linkbreakers.com/help/article/how-to-add-an-ai-chat-bot-to-a-qr-code). Create agents in **Agents** in the dashboard menu, or directly from a Chat bot step.

Agents are not the Assistant. The Assistant helps you build and analyse inside Linkbreakers. An agent talks to the people who scan your QR codes and open your links.

## Quick summary

- **Agents** has its own entry in the dashboard menu, under Configure.
- Most settings are presets you pick from, each refined by an optional free-text field.
- Knowledge is a set of Markdown documents, written in place or uploaded as `.md` files, up to 50,000 characters per agent.
- Changes are saved as you go and apply to every step that uses the agent.
- The agent's page lists the links whose Chat bot steps use it. An agent in use cannot be deleted.
- Available on every plan, through the dashboard, the API, the MCP server and the Assistant.

## Step-by-step

1. Open [Agents](https://app.linkbreakers.com/workspace/dashboard/agents) from the dashboard menu and click **New agent**.
2. Give it a **Name** visitors will see, pick its **Role**, and click **Create agent**. Its page opens.
3. Tune it, section by section. Every change is saved as you go.
4. Add what it should know under **Knowledge**.
5. Plug it into a [Chat bot step](https://linkbreakers.com/help/article/how-to-add-an-ai-chat-bot-to-a-qr-code) on a link.

You can also create an agent while adding a Chat bot step: pick **Create a new agent** in the agent list, or fill in the short form shown when the workspace has none. **Edit agent** on the step opens the same settings in a panel over the workflow.

## Settings

### Identity

- **Name**: how the agent introduces itself.
- **Role**: Lead qualifier, Event concierge, Feedback collector, Product expert, Support FAQ, or Custom (your instructions only).
- **Instructions**: who your business is and what matters to you. The agent follows them on top of its role.

### Voice

- **Tone**: Friendly, Professional, Playful, Concise or Enthusiastic, with optional **Style notes** for anything the tone does not cover.
- **Reply length**: Short (one or two sentences), Medium or Detailed.
- **Language**: match the visitor's language, or always speak one language.
- **Use emoji**: on or off.

### Visitor questions

What the agent does when a visitor asks something: **Answer, then steer back** to what it needs to learn (the default), **Answer briefly**, **Collect only** (politely declines questions), or **Free conversation**.

### Guardrails

Rules the agent never breaks, whatever a visitor writes:

- **Stay on topic**
- **Only answer from knowledge**: never invents facts, says it does not know instead
- **No promises**: no prices, discounts or dates it could be held to
- **No competitors**
- **No professional advice**: no legal, medical or financial advice
- **Decline offensive requests**

New agents start with Stay on topic, No promises and Decline offensive requests. Add your own rules under **Custom rules**.

### Knowledge

Click **Write** to type a Markdown document in place, with a preview, or **Upload** to add a `.md` file. An agent can have up to 20 documents and 50,000 characters in total. Headings, short paragraphs and lists help it find the right answer.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does creating an agent cost anything?

No. Agents are free to create and edit. Only the messages an agent answers in a Chat bot step cost platform credits.

### Can one agent run several chat bots?

Yes. The same agent can be used on as many links as you like, each Chat bot step with its own list of things to learn.

### Why can't I delete an agent?

An agent used by a Chat bot step cannot be deleted. Its page lists those links under **Used in**: give their steps another agent or delete the steps, then delete the agent.

### Can the Assistant create agents?

Yes. Ask it, for example: "create a friendly agent for our booth that answers questions about our product". It can also add knowledge and set up a Chat bot step.
