Short answer
Vehicle signage is the one advertising channel most businesses already pay for and never measure. A QR code on the back doors or rear panel makes it measurable: you get scans with timestamps and approximate locations, which tells you which routes, depots and parking spots generate enquiries. Point it at a quote form rather than your homepage.
Where it gets scanned, and why that shapes the design
A vehicle is read in one of two situations, and only one of them is any use:
- Stationary — parked at a job, at a depot, in a car park, or in traffic. This is where essentially every scan happens.
- Moving — effectively never. Nobody scans a van doing 50.
That makes placement a parking question, not a driving one. The rear doors and the lower rear panel are read by whoever is behind you at a light or walking past in a car park. A code on the side is read while the vehicle is parked at a job, which is often the highest-intent moment you get: a neighbour watching work being done.
Print it large. A code read from three metres needs to be far bigger than one on a leaflet, and vehicle vinyl is not the place to economise on size. High contrast, matte rather than gloss, and away from curved panels or door seams that distort the pattern.
What to point it at
Your homepage wastes the moment. Someone scanning a van has a specific thought — what do they charge, are they available, who are they — and a short quote request form answers it while they are still standing there.

Measuring it
One code per vehicle is what makes the data useful. The same code across a fleet tells you the fleet works; separate codes tell you which vehicles, routes and depots do.
Location on each scan is city-level, so you learn which areas generate interest, not which street. Over a few months that is enough to decide where to send vehicles and whether a second van in a different town would pay.
Limits and caveats
- Location is approximate, from the network rather than GPS. It shows the area, not the parking space.
- Scan volumes are low compared with print or digital. Judge this over months, not days.
- Vinyl fades and gets dirty. A code that has lost contrast stops scanning long before it looks unreadable to you — test yours periodically.
- Check local rules on vehicle advertising, and never encourage scanning by other drivers in traffic.
- A code on a vehicle lasts as long as the wrap. Keep the destination current rather than pointing at a campaign that ends.
Frequently asked questions
How big should the code be on a van?
Larger than feels necessary. Scanning distance is the deciding factor, and rear-door codes are typically read from two to four metres. The print dimension benchmarks cover the sizing maths.
Should every vehicle have the same code?
Only if you do not care which vehicle produced the result. One per vehicle costs nothing and is far more useful.
Can I change the destination without re-wrapping?
Yes. The code is dynamic, so you can point it at a seasonal offer now and the quote form later, with the same vinyl.
Do people really scan vehicles?
In car parks and at job sites, yes. In moving traffic, no. Expect modest numbers with unusually high intent.
Where should it go on the vehicle?
