# Linkbreakers vs Bitly for links opened in Instagram and TikTok

> Links in an Instagram bio, a TikTok profile, a story or an ad open in the app's in-app browser. Bitly reports the referring app when one is sent; Linkbreakers detects the in-app browser on every visit, records which app, and routes on it. Neither escapes automatically. Prices, plans and when to choose each.

## Short answer

**Choose Bitly** if you want a well-known short link for your bio, posts and ads, and a report of which sites and apps sent the clicks. Bitly's referrer list names Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Messenger, Snapchat, LinkedIn, WeChat and more, and its links keep working after a downgrade.

**Choose Linkbreakers** if you need to know, for every visit, whether it opened in an in-app browser and which app's, and to do something about it in the same link: a page asking in-app visitors to open the link in Safari, a separate path for TikTok, a form, the visit sent to your CRM.

The difference is where the app name comes from. Bitly reports **referrers**, and its own help center says clicks with none are shown as Direct; its blog adds that in-app browsers "may strip or obscure UTM parameters, causing traffic to appear as direct". Linkbreakers reads the **in-app browser's user agent**, which names the app on every request.

Neither tool pushes visitors out of the in-app browser. If that is what you need, see [Bouncy](/help/article/linkbreakers-vs-bouncy-in-app-browser-links-for-instagram-and-tiktok) and the [other in-app browser tools](/help/article/best-in-app-browser-tools-for-instagram-and-tiktok-links).

On price, Bitly's Free plan makes 5 links a month with ads and shows no referrer data; Core is $10 a month, Growth $29 and Premium $199, all billed yearly (read 2026-11-03).

Linkbreakers is free to start ($0, credits for 5 new links a month), Light costs $7.90 a month or $5.90 billed yearly, and Pro $34.90 or $24.90.

## Bitly in a social bio

Bitly is the short link most people know, and for a bio link it does the basics well: a short, branded address (a complimentary custom domain from Growth), the destination editable later, and clicks counted without limit. Its referrer report is good enough to see that Instagram sends more than TikTok, as long as the apps send a referrer.

What it does not do is change anything for in-app visitors. A Bitly link sends everyone to the same destination, so a checkout that breaks inside Instagram breaks for every Instagram visitor, and Bitly has no condition to treat them differently.

## What Linkbreakers adds for in-app visitors

- **It knows when a visit is in-app.** Every visit records whether the browser is an in-app browser and which app. In-app traffic that a referrer report would count as Direct is named.
- **It routes on it.** With the [Browser condition](/help/article/how-to-use-device-conditions), in-app visitors can see a [message page](/help/article/how-to-create-a-message-page) explaining how to open the link in Safari or Chrome while everyone else goes straight through; TikTok, which blocks the escapes other apps allow, can get its own page; a step that fails in web views, such as adding a Wallet pass, can be skipped. An in-app visit matches only in-app values: the Instagram browser on an iPhone is not "Safari".
- **It counts people correctly.** Until this release, Linkbreakers itself counted Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest and TikTok in-app visitors as bots, so they were left out of human analytics and fired no retargeting pixel. Detecting the in-app browser fixed that.
- **The link does more than redirect.** [Forms](/help/article/how-to-create-a-form), Meta, Google, TikTok and LinkedIn [pixels](/help/article/retargeting-pixels-meta-google-tiktok-linkedin-and-google-tag-manager), GA4 sent server side, [webhooks](/help/article/how-do-webhooks-work-in-linkbreakers), the REST API and the [MCP server](/help/article/mcp-server-setup), all on Free.

## When to choose Bitly

- **You want a short link and a referrer report**, and the same destination for everyone is fine.
- **Your team already runs campaigns in Bitly**, with its landing pages and QR codes, and you would rather not move.
- **You need deep links into your own iOS or Android app** and can pay for Premium.

## When to choose Linkbreakers

- **You want the app behind every visit**, including the ones a referrer report counts as Direct.
- **In-app visitors should get a different path** from people in Safari or Chrome, or TikTok a different one from Instagram.
- **A click should capture a lead or reach your CRM** without a sales-led plan.

## Limits and caveats

- **Neither tool escapes the in-app browser.** On Linkbreakers the "open in your browser" page is one you write, and the visitor still uses the app's menu.
- **Bitly does not document how it decides a referrer,** so it may read more than the referrer header. Its help center says clicks from emails, text messages and typed links are Direct.
- **Prices change.** Bitly's were read on its pricing page on 2026-11-03; Growth and Premium are shown as annual charges of $348 and $2,388.
- **We make Linkbreakers.** Bitly facts are quoted from Bitly's own pages. For a broader comparison of the two, see [Linkbreakers vs Bitly](/help/article/linkbreakers-vs-bitly-qr-which-api-offers-better-tracking-and-branding-control).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Bitly show clicks from Instagram's in-app browser?

It shows Instagram as a referrer when Instagram sends one. Clicks without a referrer are shown as Direct, and Bitly's own blog says in-app browsers can make traffic appear that way.

### Does Bitly open links outside the Instagram in-app browser?

No. Its mobile deep links, on Premium, open your own app, not the visitor's browser.

### Can Linkbreakers send TikTok visitors somewhere different from Instagram visitors?

Yes. A Browser condition with a TikTok branch and an Instagram branch sends each to its own step; add Facebook, Messenger and Threads options pointing to the Instagram step to treat them alike.
