# Linkbreakers vs URLgenius: in-app browser and app links for social media

> URLgenius opens links from Instagram, TikTok and other social apps in native apps such as Amazon, or in the external browser, priced per click. Linkbreakers detects which app's in-app browser opened a link, reports it and routes on it inside a workflow, without opening native apps. Prices, limits and when to choose each.

## Short answer

**Choose URLgenius** if your links from social media should open a native app: an Amazon product page in the Amazon app, a video in YouTube, a marketplace listing where the shopper is already signed in. Opening apps without an SDK is URLgenius's core product, and it has a switch to "optimize for external browsers". Linkbreakers does neither: it has no app deep links and no automatic escape.

**Choose Linkbreakers** if you need to know which app's in-app browser every visitor used and act on it inside the same link: a page asking in-app visitors to open the link in their browser, a separate path for TikTok, a form, routing by country or language, and the visit sent to your systems by webhook, API or MCP server.

On price, URLgenius is billed per click: Starter is $0 with free clicks during a "qualified trial", Growth is $0.02 a click (a branded domain is $49 extra), and Custom starts at $99 a month at $0.01 a click or less. Linkbreakers has fixed plans: Free ($0), Light $7.90 a month or $5.90 billed yearly, Pro $34.90 or $24.90, and every visit redirects whatever the plan. ## What URLgenius does well

URLgenius has been around longer than any other tool in this category: urlgenius.com was registered in 2005 and urlgeni.us in 2011. It claims "50K+ companies" and an Inc. 5000 listing. Its focus is commerce: links from Instagram, TikTok or an ad that open a marketplace app where the shopper is already signed in, instead of a web page inside the social app.

Its pricing suits low or uneven volume: you pay per click, the first clicks are free during its trial, and on Custom, clicks are free for a month when you reach your monthly marketplace sales goal.

Its blog says a global fashion brand "was seeing only 10% of mobile ad traffic in Google Analytics" because of in-app browsers. That is one unnamed customer's case, reported by URLgenius, not a measured industry figure.

## What Linkbreakers does instead

Linkbreakers leaves the visitor in the browser they opened, and tells you which one it is.

- **Detection on every visit.** Each visit records whether it was an in-app browser, which app, and the app version, app language, hardware model (and for WeChat, network type) when the user agent carries them. It shows in Live, on each visitor and device, in an "In-app browser" analytics breakdown, in CSV exports and in [webhooks](/help/article/how-do-webhooks-work-in-linkbreakers).
- **Routing on it.** With the [Browser condition](/help/article/how-to-use-device-conditions), in-app visitors can get a [message page](/help/article/how-to-create-a-message-page) explaining how to open the link in Safari or Chrome, TikTok its own page, and steps that break in web views (adding a Wallet pass, downloading a file) can be skipped. An in-app visit matches only in-app values: Instagram's browser on an iPhone is not "Safari".
- **The rest of the link.** [Forms](/help/article/how-to-create-a-form), routing by country, language or time, Meta, Google, TikTok and LinkedIn pixels, GA4 sent server side, the REST API and an [MCP server](/help/article/mcp-server-setup), all on the Free plan.

## When to choose URLgenius

- **Your links sell on Amazon or another marketplace**, and the shopper should land in its app.
- **You run paid social with uneven volume** and prefer paying per click to a monthly plan.
- **You want the escape handled for you** with a switch, rather than a page your visitors act on.

## When to choose Linkbreakers

- **You need the app behind each visit**, in reports, exports and your CRM, including from apps that send no referrer.
- **Each app should get its own path**, or in-app visitors should skip steps that fail there.
- **The link should capture or qualify a lead** before it redirects.
- **Developers or AI agents will manage the links**, through the API, SDKs or MCP server.

## Limits and caveats

- **URLgenius's pricing page is partly garbled:** the Custom plan shows both $99 and $199 a month as its starting price. Confirm with URLgenius.
- **URLgenius does not describe how its external-browser switch works,** so we cannot say which apps or iOS versions it covers. Other vendors agree that iOS needs a tap and TikTok and X block programmatic escape ([U2L](https://u2l.ai/features/open-in-external-browser)).
- **Linkbreakers has no automatic escape and no native app deep links.**
- **Linkbreakers analytics retention:** 2 weeks on Free, 3 months on Light, 2 years on Pro.
- **We make Linkbreakers.** URLgenius facts are quoted from URLgenius's own pages.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does URLgenius report which social app a click came from?

Its pricing page describes "unique link insights" and its blog explains how in-app browsers hide referrers. We found no report naming the in-app browser behind each click.

### Can Linkbreakers open a link in the Amazon app?

No. A Linkbreakers link redirects to a URL; it has no app deep-linking feature. Whether a phone then opens an app depends on the phone and the destination.

### Which is cheaper?

It depends on volume. At $0.02 a click, 1,000 clicks on URLgenius Growth cost $20. Linkbreakers plans are fixed: Light is $7.90 a month, and visits beyond a plan's tracked journeys still redirect.
