# LinkedIn Insight Tag retargeting for QR codes and links

> Connect your LinkedIn Insight Tag to Linkbreakers so every person who scans your QR codes or opens your links can be retargeted with LinkedIn ads. Where to find the partner ID, what the tag records, website audiences, how to check it, consent and limits.

:::try-ai-prompt {"prompt":"Connect my LinkedIn partner ID 1234567 to all my links and QR codes","description":"Set up the LinkedIn Insight Tag with the Assistant.","target":"assistant"}:::

## Short answer

Open **Integrations** in the Linkbreakers dashboard, pick **LinkedIn Insight Tag** under **Retargeting pixels**, paste your partner ID and select **Connect**. From then on, every person who scans one of your QR codes or opens one of your links loads your Insight Tag, which records the page view, and you can build a LinkedIn website audience from them.

This suits B2B placements well: a booth sign at a trade show, a QR code on a brochure or a business card, a slide at a conference. Everyone who scanned can see your LinkedIn ads afterwards, including the people who did not leave their details.

The tag adds a short page before the redirect, usually well under a second and never longer than 1.2 seconds. It is available on every plan, Free included.

## Quick summary

- One LinkedIn partner ID per workspace, applied to every link and QR code
- Loads the Insight Tag base script, which records the page view
- The page URL LinkedIn records is the Linkbreakers short link address
- Only people fire it: bots, link previews, AI agents and automated browsers are skipped
- Consent for marketing cookies is the workspace's responsibility
- Also available from the Assistant, the MCP server, the REST API and the CLI

## How it works with LinkedIn

Once the Insight Tag is connected, a person's visit goes through a brief page in their browser. That page loads LinkedIn's standard Insight Tag base script with your partner ID. The base script records the page view, the same way it does on a website where the tag is installed. The page then redirects as soon as the script has loaded and had about 300 ms to send, and never later than 1.2 seconds.

LinkedIn records the page URL, which is the address of the Linkbreakers link that was opened, such as your short link or your custom domain link.

### Audiences you can build

In **LinkedIn Campaign Manager**, create a **website audience** (LinkedIn's retargeting audience from website visitors) based on your Insight Tag. Use a rule on the page URL: all visitors of your link domain, or visitors of URLs that contain the short link of one campaign. LinkedIn renames its menus from time to time; look for the audiences section of your ad account.

LinkedIn requires the audience to reach a minimum size before it serves ads, and it fills over the following days. A small event may not reach it on its own; grouping several campaigns' short links in one audience helps.

## Where to find your partner ID

In **LinkedIn Campaign Manager**, open your ad account, then **Measure > Signals manager > Insight Tag**. Choose the option to use a tag manager, and the partner ID is shown in a box you can copy. If you have not created an Insight Tag yet, LinkedIn asks you to accept its ads agreement and create one first.

Linkbreakers checks the shape when you save: a partner ID is digits only. Anything else is refused with `RETARGETING_PIXEL_INVALID`, and nothing is changed.

## Step-by-step in Linkbreakers

1. Open the dashboard and go to **Integrations**
2. Under **Retargeting pixels**, open **LinkedIn Insight Tag**
3. Paste your partner ID and select **Connect**
4. Read the delay notice and the consent note on the page
5. [Check that the tag fires](#how-to-check-that-it-fires)

To use another partner ID, replace it and select **Save**. To turn it off, select **Remove**. When no pixel is left on the workspace, links go back to redirecting instantly.

## How to check that it fires

1. Open one of your links in a normal browser window, not a private window with tracking blocked
2. In **Campaign Manager**, open **Signals manager > Insight Tag** and check the status of your tag

The status shows **Unverified** until LinkedIn receives a signal, and LinkedIn says it can take up to 24 hours to switch to **Active** after a visit. If you already use the same tag on your website, the status was active before; look at the URLs reported in your website audience instead.

To check on the spot, open your browser's developer tools on the **Network** tab before opening the link, and look for requests to LinkedIn on the first page, before the redirect.

Ad blockers and some browsers' tracking protection block the Insight Tag. Visitors who use them block it on your links too, as on any website.

## The short delay

A tag is JavaScript that runs in the visitor's browser, and a plain redirect runs none. So once a pixel is connected, people's visits go through the brief page described above: usually well under a second, never longer than 1.2 seconds. Workspaces without any pixel keep the instant redirect.

If you also use Advanced data collection, both share the same page, so the visit loads one page, not two.

## Who fires the tag

Only visits classified as **Human** go through the pixel page. Crawlers, link previews (Slack, Teams, Discord, WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn), AI agents and recognized automated browsers get the instant redirect. When someone shares your link in a LinkedIn post, LinkedIn's preview bot does not join your audience.

See [how Linkbreakers detects AI agents and automated browsers](/help/article/how-linkbreakers-detects-ai-agents-and-automated-browsers) for how visits are classified.

## Consent

The Insight Tag sets LinkedIn's marketing cookies. In the EU and the UK, that usually needs the visitor's consent first. Linkbreakers does not show a consent banner. Covering the tag in your privacy policy and consent setup is the workspace's responsibility.

LinkedIn's terms also say the Insight Tag should not be used on pages that collect or contain sensitive data, such as consumer health or financial pages. Keep that in mind for the destinations and link names of a workspace with the tag connected.

## Set it up from an AI agent, the API or the CLI

**Assistant**: in the dashboard, ask "Connect my LinkedIn partner ID 1234567 to all my links".

**MCP server**: an agent connected to the [Linkbreakers MCP server](/help/article/mcp-server-setup) calls `retargeting_pixels_update` with `linkedin_partner_id`. Only the fields sent change, so the other pixels keep their value. For example:

> Set my LinkedIn partner ID to 1234567 on my Linkbreakers workspace and leave the other pixels as they are.

**REST API**, with a token that has the `integrations:write` scope:

```bash
curl -X PUT https://api.linkbreakers.com/v1/retargeting-pixels \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $LINKBREAKERS_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"linkedinPartnerId": "1234567"}'
```

Send `{"linkedinPartnerId": ""}` to remove it.

**CLI**, from the next CLI release:

```bash
linkbreakers retargeting-pixels update --linkedin-partner-id 1234567
```

See [set up every Linkbreakers integration with an AI agent](/help/article/set-up-linkbreakers-integrations-with-an-ai-agent-mcp) for the other integrations an agent can configure.

## Limits and caveats

- **Page views only.** The Insight Tag records the visit. Linkbreakers does not send LinkedIn conversions, and there is no Conversions API connection
- **Workspace-wide.** The tag applies to every link and QR code of the workspace. There is no per-link choice yet; use a URL rule in your LinkedIn audience to split campaigns
- **One partner ID per workspace.** For a second one, add it as a tag in [Google Tag Manager](/help/article/google-tag-manager-for-qr-codes-and-links)
- **Short delay on people's visits**, usually well under a second, never longer than 1.2 seconds
- **No consent banner.** Consent is the workspace's responsibility
- **Blocked like any tag** by ad blockers and tracking protection
- **Minimum audience size.** LinkedIn only serves ads to an audience once it is large enough

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I retarget the people who scanned my trade show booth sign on LinkedIn?

Yes. Connect the Insight Tag, then build a website audience on the URL of the booth's short link. See [how trade show exhibitors use QR codes to capture and qualify leads](/help/article/how-trade-show-exhibitors-use-qr-codes-to-capture-and-qualify-leads) for the lead capture side.

### Why does my Insight Tag still say Unverified?

LinkedIn says the status can take up to 24 hours to switch to Active after a visit. Open one of your links in a normal browser, without an ad blocker, and check again later.

### Do people need to be signed in to LinkedIn?

LinkedIn matches visitors to its members on its side. People it cannot match do not appear in the audience, which is one reason audiences take time to reach the minimum size.

### Why was my partner ID refused?

A LinkedIn partner ID is digits only. Copy the number from the Insight Tag settings, not the whole tag code.
