# Open media, and a media library for your workspace

> A new Open media step hands visitors an uploaded PDF, image or MP4 video straight from a QR code. All uploaded media now lives in a media library with its kind, where it is used and a storage allowance per plan.

## Short answer

A QR code can now open media you uploaded to Linkbreakers. The new **Open media** step hands the visitor one piece of media: a PDF, an image or an MP4 video, with no Google Drive or Dropbox link in between, and it can be swapped at any time without reprinting. All uploaded media now lives in a **media library** with its kind, where it is used and a share of your plan's storage.

## What we shipped

### The Open media step

Add an **Open media** step to a workflow, choose media from the library or upload it from the step, and the visitor scanning the QR code is taken straight to it: a PDF opens in the browser, and so does an image or a video. The media address is signed at the moment of the scan, so the printed code never carries a link that could go stale.

The QR code never changes. A restaurant that updates its menu every week points the Open media step at the new PDF, or uploads it in the step, and the next scan opens it.

Each opening is tracked like any other step. The link's activity timeline shows **Media opened** with the name of the media, and the step counts in visitor journeys and step analytics.

See [how to share a PDF, image or video from a QR code](/help/article/how-to-share-media-from-a-qr-code) for the full guide.

### An Open media link type

When the link only needs to open media, choose the **Open media** link type while creating it. The same is available everywhere else you create links:

- The API: `POST /v1/links/open-media` (`CreateOpenMediaLink`)
- The MCP server: the `links_create_open_media` tool
- The Assistant, which picks the media from your library

### Several documents behind one QR code

A multi-link page whose buttons each lead to their own Open media step puts a menu, a wine list and an allergen sheet behind one code. Add a [Back to menu button](/help/article/how-to-add-a-back-to-menu-button) to the pages behind it and visitors can move between them. Documents hosted elsewhere, such as a Google Drive link, keep using a redirect step.

### The media library

All media a workspace uploads, whether a QR code logo, a page theme image or media for an Open media step, lands in one library. Each piece of media has a **kind**: image (PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG) up to 10 MB, PDF up to 25 MB or MP4 video up to 50 MB, read from the uploaded content itself.

Nothing else is decided at upload. The same media can be used in many places at once: as a QR code logo, a background cover, a badge, a footer logo or by an Open media step. QR code logos and page theme images must be images of at most 3 MB; an Open media step takes any kind. Each picker lists all the media that fits, with the media uploaded from that section first.

A **Media** section appears in the dashboard menu once the workspace has media. It lists everything under **Your media**, with a kind label on each item, **Used as** (with a count per place) or **Not used** based on where the media is actually used, a **Used as** filter, drag and drop uploads, opening and deleting, and a storage bar against the plan's allowance. Media that an Open media step still opens cannot be deleted until the step points elsewhere, and the message names the links that use it. Deleting media used by a page theme leaves the theme without that image, and QR codes keep their own copy of a logo.

### Storage per plan

Each plan now includes media storage: a total for all the media in the workspace. The Free plan includes 25 MB, Light 500 MB and Pro 10 GB. Enterprise storage is set per contract. The numbers are also on the [pricing page](/pricing).

An upload that would go over the allowance is refused with a message showing how much storage is used. Nothing is ever deleted automatically, deleting media frees its space at once, and the QR code images Linkbreakers generates do not count.

See [your media library](/help/article/your-media-library-files-kinds-usages-and-storage) for the details.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do my existing QR codes that redirect to a PDF keep working?

Yes. Redirect steps are unchanged. Upload the PDF and hand it out with an Open media step when you want to stop maintaining the external link, or keep the redirect for documents hosted elsewhere.

### Do I need to reprint a QR code to change the PDF?

No. Point the Open media step at the new media. The QR code and the link stay the same.

### Does the media I already uploaded count toward storage?

Yes. QR code logos and page theme images already in your workspace are part of the media library and count toward storage. The QR code images Linkbreakers generates do not.

### What happens when storage is full?

New uploads are refused with a message showing how much storage is used. Nothing is removed. Delete media you no longer need, or move to a plan with more storage.

### Can I use the same image as my QR code logo and my page badge?

Yes. Pick it from the library in both places. It counts toward storage once, and the media library shows both uses under **Used as**.

### Can the Assistant upload media for me?

Upload it in the dashboard first. The Assistant can then build a link or a workflow step that hands it out.

## Limits and caveats

- The Open media step hands out PDFs, MP4 videos and PNG, JPEG, WebP or SVG images
- An Open media step is an exit step: nothing runs after it in the workflow
- The Assistant uses media already in the library; it does not upload it
- Storage is a total across the workspace and does not reset each month
- QR code logos and page theme images must be images of at most 3 MB
- In the API, uploads take an optional `uploaded_from` (informational only) and `usage` is deprecated; media that does not fit a place returns `MEDIA_NOT_ALLOWED_HERE`
