Updated October 7, 2025Workflow

Sometimes you want your QR Code to stay private. Maybe it links to a campaign that’s not yet public, an internal document, or a personalized experience. Linkbreakers makes it easy to secure any QR Code with a password, directly from your dashboard.

Start from your workspace dashboard into the link section. Find the QR Code link you want to protect with a password and click to edit it

This will open the link’s workflow, a visual flow of how your link behaves and what steps users go through when they scan your QR Code.

Add a password step

In the workflow, look for the connectors between the existing steps.
Click on the connector where you want to insert the password step.

A menu will appear; simply choose Password as the type of step you want to add.

Customize your password step

You can now define:

  • The required password to access the next step.
  • An optional title or message, such as Enter your access code or This content is protected.

Once you’re happy with your settings, insert it. That’s it. Your password is now active!

No setup or coding required

As soon as you add the step, the password protection works automatically.
There’s no need to publish, refresh, or change your QR Code.

Anyone scanning your QR Code will see a password prompt before continuing to the next step.

Secure by design

Your password is securely handled on the backend and never transmitted to the front-end, meaning it can’t be guessed or accessed through browser tools.

You can remove the password anytime, or even combine it with other workflow conditions for more complex access rules.

Add passwords via the API

If you’re managing links or workflows programmatically, you can also create and attach password steps directly using the Linkbreakers API.
This is ideal for teams automating QR Code creation or managing multiple password-protected links at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a password to any QR Code in Linkbreakers?

Yes. You can add a password step to any link or QR Code you’ve created in your workspace. The password will apply instantly once added.

How do I remove or change a password later?

Just return to the link’s workflow and delete or edit the password step. Your QR Code updates automatically — no need to reprint or regenerate it.

Are QR Code passwords stored securely?

Absolutely. Passwords are handled on the backend only and never sent to the browser or exposed in the front-end. They cannot be guessed or inspected through network tools.

Can I use the API to add a password automatically?

Yes. The Linkbreakers API allows you to create and attach password steps programmatically — ideal for bulk link creation, integrations, or automation workflows.

Will users need to re-enter the password every time they scan the QR Code

By default, yes. Each new visit prompts for the password, ensuring that access stays protected. You can modify this behavior through advanced workflow steps if needed.

Can I combine the password with other conditions, like time or location?

Yes! You can use the password step alongside other workflow conditions — such as geofencing, scheduling, or redirects — to build custom access logic.

Do I need to reprint my QR Code after adding a password?

No. The QR Code itself never changes. The password protection is part of the link’s logic, so the same printed or shared QR Code will instantly require a password.

Is there a limit to how many passwords I can set?

There’s no fixed limit — you can add password steps across as many links as you need, or even create multiple password-protected workflows using the API.

What happens if I forget the password I set?

You can always open the workflow in your dashboard to view or change the password. Only workspace admins and editors with the right permissions can access it.

How do I contact support if something doesn’t work?

You can chat with us directly in the app or email support@linkbreakers.com. We’ll help you quickly resolve any password or workflow issue.
