What's an Event?

Learn how events work in Linkbreakers and why they're essential for tracking QR code and short link performance. This guide explains what data is captured with each interaction, and how events power your analytics, lead scoring, and workflow automations. Discover how to access and export your event data to gain deeper insights into visitor behavior.

Updated October 9, 2025Overview

Events are the foundation of analytics and visitor insights in Linkbreakers. Every time someone scans a QR code or clicks a short link, an event is created to capture valuable data about that interaction.

Understanding Events

An event in Linkbreakers represents a single interaction with your QR codes or short links. Think of it as a digital footprint that captures who interacted with your content, when they did it, and how they accessed it.

Events serve multiple purposes in your Linkbreakers workspace:

  • Analytics: Track performance and engagement metrics
  • Lead scoring: Identify high-value prospects based on behavior
  • Workflow automation: Trigger automated actions based on visitor interactions
  • Real-time insights: Monitor activity as it happens

Types of Events

Linkbreakers tracks two primary types of events:

SCAN Events

A SCAN event occurs when someone interacts with your QR code or short link for the first time from a specific device. This represents a new visitor or a returning visitor using a different device.

RESCAN Events

A RESCAN event happens when the same device scans or clicks the same link again. Linkbreakers automatically detects when a device has previously interacted with a link and converts subsequent interactions to rescans.

Example: If someone scans your QR code on their phone and then scans it again an hour later from the same phone, the first interaction is a SCAN and the second is a RESCAN.

What data does an Event Capture?

Each event in Linkbreakers captures comprehensive information about the interaction:

Device Information

  • Device fingerprint: Unique identifier for the scanning device
  • Browser and platform: Type of browser, operating system, device model
  • Location data: Country, city, and regional information (when available)

Visitor Details

  • Visitor profile: Links to visitor record for behavioral tracking
  • Lead score: Automatically calculated engagement score
  • Interaction history: Previous scans and behavioral patterns
  • Entry point: The specific short URL or QR code used
  • Destination: Where the visitor was redirected
  • Workspace: Which workspace the link belongs to
  • HTTP method: How the link was accessed (GET, POST, etc.)

Timing Information

  • Scan timestamp: Exact time of interaction
  • Session data: Duration and sequence of interactions

How Events Power Your Analytics

Events feed into several key features of your Linkbreakers workspace:

Real-Time Monitoring

As events are created, you'll see instant updates in your dashboard showing:

  • Live visitor activity
  • Geographic distribution of scans
  • Device and platform breakdowns

Lead Scoring

Events contribute to automatic lead scoring by:

  • Tracking repeat interactions (higher scores for multiple scans)
  • Analyzing device patterns and behavior
  • Calculating engagement metrics based on scan frequency

Workflow Automation

Events can trigger automated workflows such as:

  • Sending follow-up messages to engaged visitors
  • Adding high-scoring leads to CRM systems
  • Personalizing content based on interaction history

Event Processing and Performance

Linkbreakers processes events using a sophisticated background system:

  1. Immediate capture: Events are recorded instantly when a scan occurs
  2. Background enrichment: Additional data (device details, location) is processed asynchronously
  3. Real-time updates: Dashboards and analytics update in real-time via WebSocket connections
  4. Duplicate detection: The system automatically identifies and properly categorizes rescans

This architecture ensures that your link performance never slows down, even during high-traffic periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long are events stored in my workspace?

Depending on your plan, events are stored for up to several years within our system.

Can I export my event data?

Yes! You can export event data in CSV format from your analytics dashboard. The export includes all captured event details including device information, timestamps, and visitor data. You can also access your events programmatically through the Linkbreakers API.

What's the difference between a visitor and an event?

A visitor represents a person or entity, while an event represents a specific interaction. One visitor can generate multiple events by scanning different links or rescanning the same link.

Why do I see both SCAN and RESCAN events for the same link?

Linkbreakers automatically detects when the same device interacts with a link multiple times. The first interaction is logged as a SCAN, and subsequent interactions from the same device become RESCANs. This helps you understand both reach (unique scans) and engagement (total interactions).

How accurate is the location data in events?

Location data is derived from IP address geolocation and is generally accurate to the city level. However, users with VPNs or privacy settings may show different or limited location information.

Can events trigger other actions in my workspace?

Absolutely! Events can trigger workflow automations, update lead scores, send notifications, and integrate with external systems through webhooks and API integrations.

Do events count against my plan limits?

Events themselves don't count against plan limits, but they are generated by scans which do count toward your monthly scan allowance. Each scan or rescan creates one event.
